Standard comic writing, a predictable plot, pretty cool alien design and Ben Stiller and co doing their thang with dick and ball gags galore. This pretty much sums up
The Watch in a nutshell - dick and ball gag intended. And if you sit down with the expectations of being blown out of your seat by a Palme d'Or worthy, life changing, Mallick-esque über film, then not only do you need a kick in the dick and balls yourself (gender specific punishment obviously), you need to have a serious think about your idea of reality.
Co-written by comedy omnipresence Seth Rogen and helmed by relative directorial newbie Akiva Shaffer,
The Watch sees Costco stalwart and small town patriot Evan (Ben Stiller) lead his newly formed Neighbourhood Watch gang (a particularly on-fire Vince Vaughn, an unhinged Jonah Hill and a slightly underused Richard Ayoade) on a mission to find the people/aliens responsible for brutally murdering Costco security guard Antonio Guzman.
What ensues is, as I said before, some pretty standard fare that moves at a solid pace with a good amount of mostly dude oriented laugh out loud moments and an "ugh, that was obviously going to happen" ending. BUT I STRESS AGAIN THAT IF YOU DIDN'T THINK THAT WAS WHAT IT WAS GOING TO BE LIKE THEN IT'S YOUR FAULT IT WASN'T!!!!
