Moon colonies, personal robots, death rays, four hour working weeks – science has failed to deliver a whole lot of awesomeness. That said, the greatest let-down has got to be flying cars. Where the hell are they? Why are we still using roads like suckers?

The idea of a flying car goes all the way back to 1905 and a short story titled Sultana’s Dream by an Indian feminist writer (fact). By the 1950s the flying car had become a symbol of the ‘Glorious Future’ that awaited us and science fiction magazines were all "Yeah, yeah, it’s totally coming. Just give it a couple of decades.”  It’s now 2010. Does your car fly?

Maybe General Motors and the other automobile giants wouldn’t be in such craptastic financial straits if they had invested in stuff people wanted (flying cars) instead of boring family sedans. Imagine it: MP3 playback, cup holders, sports trim and IT FLIES. Stock prices would soar.

I was just talking about this last week. I feel so dissapointed. I mean, Back to the future 2 was based around the year 2015... I don't see a flying car, let alone a hpverboard anywhere on the horizon...

Has anyone else noticed how "Ipod connectivity" is like the first feature they mention in car ads these days? Like that's more impressive than acceleration and braking...

Last night I watched a show called James May's Big Ideas and this episode was on specifically flying cars, or personal flying machines. He looked around the world at like jet packs, those mini 'copters on Japan and the 1950s flying car. Something I had no idea about was the flying communites in the USA. There are entire towns that you can taxi you plane around in like Florida. You taxi your plane into tthe garage and then go grab a beer... amazing. He came to the conclusion that we are still a hell of a long way away from anything practical enough for mass use in the air. Also that the major issue was not flying, but landing as you need a lot of room. Needs to be able to hover. Dissapointing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2YWGDsjh3o
