When rappers are bad role models - AKA, shilling malt liquor in the 90s

Hip hop isn’t just “money, cash, hoes”. As Chuck D will tell you, it’s about documenting the plight of the inner cities, giving the disadvantaged a voice and offering kids a way out of socio-economic fail. All fine and noble causes... Until King Tee shows up with a giant crate of malt liquor and everyone gets shot.

While Chuck D was talking up the virtues of hip hop in the early 90s, the St Ides TV spots were doing the exact opposite. Recruiting rappers to shill their nasty malt liquor, the company produced some of the most ghettotastic commercials around, reinforcing every negative cliché you can imagine.

As Ice Cube explained in his rap: “Get your girl in the mood quicker, get your jimmy thicker, with St Ides malt liquor.” Imagine trying to push that message in an alcohol commercial these days...
