Prom is a rite of passage that defines the course of your adulthood. Well, it's totally not, but if American popular culture has us believe anything it's that prom night is an event where all your life choices culminate in a fiery explosion of friendship drama, drunk sex and sometimes, pig's blood.
Mary Ellen Mark decided to examine the mysticism of this particular non-event by travelling to high schools across America and photographing prom couples. They are sometimes funny, sometimes sad and most of all they're not the Rachel Leigh Cook movie we're all use to seeing. And that's cool.
