As a surfer, short of a Great White sighting, this is pretty much my
worst nightmare... i get irritated if there are more than 10 dudes in
the water let alone 120. A new Guiness World Record was achieved at
Quebra Mar Beach in Santos, Brazil on Sunday when a still to be
verified 90 (some sources say 100, some say 83) surfers stood on the
same wave for at least 5 seconds. The
previous world record was achieved at the same event last year in the
shark infested waters of Muizenberg, Cape Town, South Africa where the
unoffical tally of 73 surfers rode the same wave smashing the previous
record of 44 in Ireland.
Event sponsor Earthwave, founded by the Kahuna Surfing Academy in Cape
Town, sought to have surfers take tries at the record Sunday in nine
different countries, from Australia to Reunion, South Africa, Portugal,
Britain, the United States, Brazil, Argentina and then Tahiti, to
highlight the problem of climate change.
"Most important was we were able to call attention to the very serious
problem of global warming," said Rico de Souza, Earthwave organizer in
Brazil.
