Lifelounge's tribute to John Hughes: the man who taught us about rebellion, cliques, nerds, jocks, criminals, prom queens, dreamboats, bullies, exercise bikes, weddings, births, deaths, vacations, wagging, parties, coral lipstick, cowboy boots, girls is kooky hats, boys in chinos, dancing, drinking, driving, making out, masturbation and the fact that teen sex and drug use doesn't always result in pregnancy, disease and/or death.

You taught us well, Mr Hughes. And we appreciate it.

Mr Mom (1983):

John Hughes genius: "Honey, you gave me some real good advice once, so let me give you some of my own. It's real easy to forget what's important, so don't."

National Lampoon's Vacation (1983):

John Hughes genius: "When I was a boy, just about every summer we'd take a vacation. And you know, in 18 years, we never had fun."

Sixteen Candles (1984):

John Hughes genius:"[into the phone] What was he wearing? Well, uh, let's see, he was wearing a red argyle sweater, and tan trousers, and red shoes... No, he's not retarded."

Weird Science (1985):

John Hughes genius: "You know, there's going to be sex, drugs, rock-n-roll, chips, dips, chains, whips... You know, your basic high school orgy type of thing. I'm not talking candle wax on the nipples or witchcraft or anything like that. No, no, no. Just a couple of hundred kids running around in their underwear acting like complete animals."

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986):

John Hughes genius: "It's not that I condone fascism or any '-ism'. A person should not believe in an 'ism', he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon: 'I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me.' A good point there. After all, he was the walrus... I could be the walrus, I'd still have to bum rides off people."

Pretty in Pink (1986):

John Hughes genius: "Andie, hon. Listen, it's after 7:00. Don't waste good lip gloss."

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987):

John Hughes genius:"Six bucks and my right nut says we're not landing in Chicago."

Some Kind of Wonderful (1987):

John Hughes genius: "Don't go mistaking paradise for a pair of long legs."

The Breakfast Club (1987):

John Hughes genius: "Screws fall out all the time, sir. The world's an imperfect place."

She's Having a Baby (1988):

John Hughes genius: "There's little or no gold to be dug. He's plenty old and people don't mature anymore. They stay jackasses all their lives."

Uncle Buck (1989):

John Hughes genius: "I don't think I want to know a six-year-old who isn't a dreamer, or a sillyheart. And I sure don't want to know one who takes their student career seriously. I don't have a college degree. I don't even have a job. But I know a good kid when I see one. Because they're ALL good kids, until dried-out, brain-dead skags like you drag them down and convince them they're no good. You so much as scowl at my niece, or any other kid in this school, and I hear about it, and I'm coming looking for you! [Looks at Anita's mole] Now, take this quarter, go downtown, and have a rat gnaw that thing off your face! Good day to you, madam."

So many brilliant movies, I hope they do a collection of all of them. Uncle Buck was definitely my favourite, what a loss =( - Jake OXOXo
