If you’re going to get yourself a hobby you may as well do it properly. Really immerse yourself in every facet. Live the metaphorical dream... The Japanese understand this. They’re world champions at ‘getting into’ stuff and going totally overboard. It’s the reason they win Jamaican booty dancing contests, and dress really well, and live about 10 years in the future. Naturally, their car Modification scene is TOTALLY INSANE.
While people in the west get excited about novelty car mufflers, 10-year-old Nissan Skylines and having Xzibit show up at their front door, Japan is on some whole other level. Their car mod scene takes its influences from old-school bike gangs (known as Bosozuko) and their very weird, very customised modifications.
As you can see from the photos, practically isn’t really a priority and half of these cars would be lucky to make it to the shops and back. That said, they look triple-sick-filth. And that’s what really counts.
Special bonus win! The Japanese bike bangs that inspired these car mods are very real and date back to the 1950s. Kaneda (and his bike gang in Akira) were based around these same gangs.
