Influential writer J.D. Salinger has died at his home aged 91-years-old. The author of iconic novels
The Catcher in the Rye and
Franny and Zooey died of natural causes, says his son.
Salinger became the voice of teenagers of all generations
The Catcher in the Rye was published in 1952; his protagonist Holden Caufield was an anti-hero whose angst, rebellion, disconnection, and identity crisis were felt by millions. This was the book you carried in your bag for months when you were 14-years-old, hoping somebody would see it and think you were intelligent and thoughtful and edgy.
Salinger's last book was published in 1965 and he gave his last interview in 1980 and led a reclusive life in Cornish. He apparently kept writing, however, and said in an interview with The Boston Globe "I love to write, and I assure you I write regularly. But I write for myself and I want to be left absolutely alone to do it."
