I'm sure none of our readers would be planning to commit serious crime
in Brazil, but if you were contemplating a little something-something
these images might help change your mind. From what the internet tells
me – and the internet doesn't lie – Brazilian prisons are massively
over-crowded and rampant with all kinds of human rights abuses, hygiene
issues, torture, brutality, murder and corruption.
Typically jails aren't exactly a holiday park and I'm sure there's a
wide variety of opinion out there amongst our readers in what kind of
punishment will suit a given crime but I'm of the school of thought
that, at the very least, the minimum basic human rights should be
observed, regardless of how much of a scumbag the occupants are.
Given the level of media attention certain prisons across the world
have gained for their inappropriate treatment of inmates, this kind of
thing isn't exactly surprising. But it doesn't really make it any easier to
digest.
