Having a nuclear bomb dropped on your head can do weird things to the psyche. For Japan – the only country to ever suffer a nuclear attack – the paranoia associated with Hiroshima and Nagasaki would manifest itself in monster movies.

While the Godzilla films from the 50s might look like cheap schlock to us, they actually contain some not very subtle messages about nuclear power, science, technology and not being a jerk. This would gradually be phased out as the decade progressed and by the time the 60s rolled around the Daikaiju (Giant Monster) movies were pretty much just men in rubber suits wrestling...

I have the entire Godzilla DVD collection at home - 20+ movies - picked it up as part of a contra deal and, much as I love them, I've only ever watched about 5. The trailers are fantastic though.
