1980s advertising styles

It was one of those days where I happened to flip through an old 1980s BMX magazine and noticed that a few of the styles were basically exactly the same as what we wear and are influenced by this very day and age. So I kept digging. I hunted down a whole lot of 1980s BMX advertising pages and spreads (with a couple of skate and snow ones thrown in for good measure) and made this collection for you all to peruse. A couple are not ad's, but in there anyway as they were just so awesome. Check the shot of Eddie Fiola doing an air with the close up of the Vans low-cut sneakers that you can basically go out today and buy a pair of. Incredible how long Vans and Converse have managed to stay cool (we won't mention the mid 90s)

Images like these give me a lot of pleasure to look at, I think partly because I love the 80s BMX era. Partly because I love the neon colours, and partly because they personify rad.

Enjoy.

Yeah that Slimball ad was badass. Remember Cockroach wheels? Dope. The documentary on Gator is full of this style too.

I should hunt down some 80s Skateboarding ones next, there were so many good ads. The BMX ones were a bit more neon and vibrant though.

so easy to figure out what they are trying to sell you, wonder if it will ever get back to that simple way of thinking.

Fluffybits I completely agree. It seems so much clearer and more honest in some respects. As a kid growing up, reading one of those Haro or GT long copy ads I would pour over every detail because the ad was so cool and I loved the detail. There is a lot of styles in here that are also being used / ripped right here and now! Good to look at them.
