Yousuf Karsh was one of the world's most famous portrait photographers – not just for his moody and cinematic style, but also because of the significance of his subjects. The Armenian artist created portraits for the famous, infamous, talented and beautiful; Ernest Hemingway to Albert Einstein, Grace Kelly to WH Auden, JFK to Andy Warhol.
Karsh lived through the Armenian Genocide, when he saw his sister die of starvation, escaped to Syria and eventually based himself in Canada. He retired to Boston where he died in 2002.
