Often called one of "the most celebrated and least known photographers of our time" Helen Levitt was an active photographer for over 70 years. Pretty much inventing street photography, Levitt was incredibly shy and wary of fame and publicity.
She dropped out of high school, taught herself how to take a photograph
and wandered the streets of New York, at first fascinated by children's
chalk drawings on footpaths. The result was photography that transcended era, race, gender and class.
Levitt died just days ago, leaving behind a historical and beautiful treasure for the rest of us.
