Do you remember the person who first introduced you to the band Nirvana? I can't remember the specific person who turned me onto them but i do remember the first time I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit on the radio. It completely blew my mind and managed to encapsulate the precise fucked up sensation of what it felt like to be a teenager in the early 90s.

Last year Jason Lazarus, a 31 year old photography instructor at Columbia College put out a request for a bunch of his friends to share their memories of who first enlightened them to the iconic Seattle band.  It has become The Nirvana Project . You can view a sample of these images and stories in the thumbnails to the right of this post --->

According to an article in Time out Chicago, Lazarus doesn't even have a Nirvana story. He first caught the wave when Kurt Cobain and Nirvana exploded onto MTV while  he was in high school in Kansas (though he included a story and photo of the friend who introduce him to Sonic Youth and  Pavement; the friend incidentally, got her Cobain addiction from her dad).

If you have a Nirvana story and would like to share your experience with Jason, submission can be set via email to jasonlazarus.photo@gmail.com. For more information about Jason Lazarus visit his website or blog.

Incidentally, in other Nirvana news, Jason Lazarus just photographed, the now  17 year old baby from the front cover of Nirvana's Nevermind album.  The young Spencer Elden is in his last year of high school in LA.

Respect Katie
That is such a cool idea, the little stories with the photos are great. Maybe we can start one and call it the MC Hammer Project? Or maybe not.

My son Jesse, now 26, introduced me to Nirvana when he asked me to drive him to the mall to buy the cassette of "Nevermind." We listened to it in the car on the way home and I was blown away. Jesse heard Nirvana for the first time from his best friend Aaron, who died at 23 in a motorcycle race. He turned Jesse's life around in more ways than one, but sparked a love of music that survives to this day. (My first post; love this site).
