Shot circa 1979, these images by Japanese photographer Kohei Yoshiyuki capture a unique social phenomena that occurred in Japan during the 70s. Due to the tiny overcrowded apartment living in Tokyo at the time, couples were forced into city parks to find some privacy for a little nookie. However with the couples came the voyeurs, a group of men prowling the parks for unaware couples, under the cover of darkness.
Yoshiyuki came across the voyeurs on a walk through the Shinjuku district with a friend one night and became intrigued, returning to the parks with his camera over a period of six months, shooting the voyeurs activities with an infrared flash.
The resulting images are currently on display for the first time since 1979 at the
Yossi Milo Gallery in NYC until October 20, however if you can't get to the show, check out the audio slide show at the New York Times
here, or take a peek at some of the other images to the right.
