Part activist, part artist, French photographer JR's
Women are Heroes
project has the most noble of causes. He seeks to not only highlight
the hardships, struggles, violence and crimes against women across the
world but also acknowledge their courage and pivotal roles in their
communities. The project has taken place in Sudan, Sierra Leon, Brazil,
Kenya, Liberia, Cambodia and he also plans to continue it across
India, Laos and Morocco.
In each place he visits, with his 28mm lens he
photographs women from these communities and blows them up to enormous
sizes in highly public spaces for the world to see. Whether it be
entire train carriages in Kenya or entire buildings in the notoriously
dangerous Morro da Providencia favela in Brazil, his portraits reveal
the inner strength of these women for an injustice that should never be
ignored.
Below is a short video about the project and to the right of this post are some examples of JR's oversized portraits across the world.
