But when NASA's shuttle program officially closed after Atlantis touched down in July, 2011, photographer Neil DeCosta and art director Sara Phillips did have a wonder, resulting in their absurd series Astronaut Suicides. Featuring a bunch of fully kitted out spacemen either pre, mid or post their chosen version of the grim act, Astronaut Suicides is a disturbing musing on life after space travel that momentarily offsets the tragedy of suicide with a heavy dose of stupidity.
