Canadian-born, now-New Yorker, Lyle Owerko is a filmmaker and photographer whose works have been collected and used everywhere from the Sundance Channel (he's directed Mr Robert Redford) to MTV (he has made music videos for artists like Rufus Wainwright).
Owerko took some of the most heartbreaking, scary and important photographs in New York on September 11th, apparently shooting six rolls of film solely of people jumping from the towers. His image of the World Trade Centre was used for the cover of Time magazine, and has become one of the most famous images of our time.
Lyle travels around the world for both assignments and personal work; this gallery is called Radio Simba - portraits of the radio vendors of East Africa. Owerko found that no matter where he travelled, there were people with boomboxes blasting tunes, he believes it's because music is a universal escape.
