Starting its life as a conversation between Schmeliing and a friend around the creation of a photobook based on a record, Atlanta went on to become much more than the New York-based photographer ever expected. Schmelling finally settled on Outkast's Aquemini as the source for the photobook but after confirming the contract and starting work, he realised there was a much broader story to be told.
Cancelling the contract and using Outkast as starting point, Atlanta became an insight into the hip hop cultural scene of the Georgia city. The series sways between a doco, portrait and intimate cultural exploration of a city steeped in rich hip hop heritage that's produced artists such as Andre 3000, Gucci Mane, Cee Lo Green, Boyz n Da Hood and many more. It's brilliant stuff and we're keen as fuck to get our hands on the book.
