Ilona Szwarc travelled across America photographing little girls with their dolls. When the Polish photographer immigrated to New York she was taken with the American Girl Dolls, an individualised toy resembling a 9-year-old girl.
Seeing it as the antithesis of Babrie Girl culture, Szwarc was interested in capturing the relationships that girls had with these dolls. Do they perpetrate traditional gender roles? Do they allow young girls a positive identification with someone who looks like them? Or all of the above?
