After having lived a semi-rural farm life as a child in the suburbs of New York City, where back-to-the-land practices like bartering home grown veggies for a dentist appointment went hand-in-hand with modern day living principles, photographer Lucas Foglia developed a curiosity for investigating other self sufficient communities.
Foglia spent four years travelling through the southwest of America photographing, interviewing and generally just hanging out with groups of people who have chosen to live "off-the-grid". Motivated by religious beliefs, environmental worries or financial concerns, they build their own homes, hunt and gather their own food and collect water from nearby springs.
