I would be lying if I said I wasn’t shitting myself in anticipation at the release of Chk Chk Chk’s third album Myth Takes. After the breakthrough success of the brilliant Louden Up Now, Myth Takes hits the ground running, picking up the solid grooves and punk swagger where Louden Up Now left off, coming in with a heavier focus on succinct song writing, punchy hooks and a pure funk energy that showcases a musical progression and maturity that wasn’t as readily evident in it’s predecessor. With an electrifying sound that sways between psychedelic funk, elated dance and almost tribal percussion, Myth Takes is as diverse as it is brilliant. Layered production, built off of extensive freestyle jams display this eight piece’s ability to make full use of their extensive line up without sounding too cluttered, messy or overworked. Overall Myth Takes is a stunning album that not only shows an evolution in Chk Chk Chk’s’s song writing, but pushes the bar higher in the sometimes stale world of dance punk.
