A few weeks ago, wearing a t-shirt that said "FREE PUSSY RIOT!'" would probably get you kicked out of restaurants/ punched in the face. But now not only has the imprisonment of the Russian punk band sparked global conversations about freedom of speech, but they're the most famous band you've probably never heard.
Just to recap, Pussy Riot are an all girl band who like to perform in unconventional spaces, for example in a church on a Russian Orthodox holy day. They are anti Putin and anti the Russian Orthodox Church, and are outspoken about the misogyny of both these controlling forces in Russia. Having been roughed up by police a few times, three band members have now been sentenced to two years in prison for "hooliganism". Everyone thinks this is a weirdly harsh move.
While it's become quite cool to pledge your support for Pussy Riot (but really, your motivation in wanting them freed is beside the point), we have a feeling that most people don't know what they actually sound like. This goes out to you Madonna!
