'Femcee' is a poxy term and thus we will refrain from using it in reference to Rita J. This female MC (there is a difference) from Atlanta via Chicago has been hustling in her local circles for about ten years, but has only just put out a full-length debut. No doubt she will cop references to Jean Grae – not due to style, but because she’s a woman who raps NOT like Lil’ Kim or Foxy Brown. But, just like Jean Grae, she has already received props and kudos from her esteemed male counterparts.
Rita’s recently released album
Artist Workshop is 14 tracks deep, featuring on-mic appearances from Guilty Simpson and our previously profiled
Black Spade. Some of the cuts are a bit too 'party people, body rockin' for our taste, but on tracks such as the one below, her more solemn approach works quite nicely. We also get a bit of a
Stacy Epps vibe from this one, which is never a bad thing.
