Forged from the rhythmic, nu-funk experimentations of their fearless leader Nicolaas Oogjes back in 2007, genre-hopping Melbourne-based dance band NO Z
U are on the cusp of releasing their killer debut album and a four state tour to follow.
is the culmination of two EPs, collaborations, contemplation, friends, some instruments and has resulted in a fully realised album that melds ideas of glamour, universal suburbia and sensuality with a myriad of percussive heavy, nu-funk driven, globally reaching sounds. It's already gaining momentum with RRR giving it a nod with Album of the Week.
It's the kind of album that takes you fucking ages to explain how it sounds to someone because there's so much going on. Oogjes puts it best himself... in a tripped out kinda way that is - “..broad, all encompassing and infinite. Life is also deeply personal, individual and finishes all too quickly. Life is a trip to the IGA, but also moments of euphoria and experiences of uplifting trance states. NO ZU are part of this like everyone/everything else - unpretentiously universal, non-niche, quoting suburban motifs and trawling the 'uncool'/our real-lives for inspiration. Life
is a slogan lifted from TV Week and pasted onto Tony Robbins forehead”.
No Zu also recently released a clip for 'Emotion', the first single from the album. Shot in a caravan park in South Werribee, the video oozes a slightly creepy, inbred, Larry Clarke vibe which totally fits the clunky, percussion laden groove of the track.
The band also enlisted Melbourne-based soul catcher, Paul Hermes
, to shoot a stills collaboration with Oogjes entitled 'Nightclubbing Through Suburbia'. Iz all good stuff.
