Hip Hopolitics - when the public votes

VH1's Hip Hop List
As much as we hate a list, we love a list. At least, we love our own. This one is from VH1 who asked their readers of their website to vote for the Top 100 Hip Hop Songs of all time. The results? Both obvious and interesting. And nauseating.

20. Kanye West ft/ Jamie Foxx - 'Gold Digger'
19. Ice T - 'Colors'
18. 50 Cent - 'In Da Club'
17. Sir Mix-A-Lot - 'Baby Got Back'
16. Missy Elliott - "Get Ur Freak On'
15. Eminem - 'Stan'
14. Tupac - 'I Get Around'
13. Wu-Tang Clan - 'C.R.E.A.M.'
12. L.L. Cool J - 'I Can't Live Without My Radio'
11. Jay-Z - 'Hard Knock Life'
10. Kurtis Blow - 'The Breaks'
9. Salt-N-Pepa - 'Push It'
8. Snoop Doggy Dogg - 'Gin and Juice'
7. Notorious B.I.G. - 'Juicy'
6. N.W.A. - 'Straight Outta Compton'
5. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five - 'The Message'
4. Run-DMC ft/ Aerosmith - 'Walk This Way'
3. Dr. Dre - 'Nuthin But A G Thang'
2. Sugarhill Gang - 'Rapper's Delight'
1. Public Enemy - 'Fight The Power'

Sure, they're mostly good songs, lots are even great songs. But are they worthy of being in the upper echelons of the list? Kanye West's 'Gold Digger' is catchy, but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't beat the genius of Afrika Bambaataa or Beastie Boys or Biz Markie or 2 Live Crew or the Roots or MC Lyte or De La Soul or Slick Rick or any number of artists that we could list. And I'm pretty sure that Fiddy Cent shouldn't even be allowed in a list entitled 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs because he is nauseatingly rubbish.

Respect -Mikolai-
'Gold Digger' was always rubbish. Whoever voted for Missy was smoking rocks. As for Sir-Mix-A-Lot, that's some kind of misprint, right? Kinda have to agree with Public Enemy at #1, it's not my favourite hip hop track but it's probably the one song that everyone can agree deserves a top 5 place.

some are deserved and some totally not, but guess what? it's only one opinion...the best thing you could do at this moment is to make your own top hundred and listen to it and have some fun and appreciate your own sense of hip hop worth. do it now!

The opinions of 100's maybe 1000's of VH1 fans are stupid. "Stan" for gods sake?

Were you only allowed one song per artist? Only one PE song is a travesty.

Check the pic of Salt-n-Pepa, if you change the hairstyles, that's what we dress like on a Saturday night. And here I was thinking at least *somthing* was original to our look :( Shattered! - Jake XOXOOX

I think if you're number one source for all-things-hip-hop is VH1 then you already don't know what the fuck is going on.
