WELCOME TO
MEXICO! Pack your bags and make a list of all the prescription drugs you want to stock up on!
Mexico is a country that has all the building blocks for excellent hip hop: inequality, vast discrepancies in wealth, racial tensions and poverty. YAY/AGH!
Chicano Rap is a sub-genre of Mexican hip hop that blends American influenced gangster rap with Latin hip hop, and it has been kicking around since the early '90s.
First up is
Kid Frost who released
Hispanic Causing Panic in 1990. It was an underground hit, then later appeared in one of the
Grand Theft Auto games and suddenly was not so underground. YOLO!
Meanwhile. this song is badass.
Now to
A Lighter Shade of Brown (!!!) with their 1990 slow jam "On a Sunday Afternoon". They're kind of like a Mexican
A Tribe Called Quest (also, CHECK THOSE OVERALLS LAYDEEZ).
QUICK FACT:
Cypress Hill are sometimes considered Chicano rappers because of their use of Mexican slang. They collaborated with Mexican crew
Psycho Realm at one time, with very '90s results.
Eazy-E formed
Brownside as a Chicano version of
N.W.A and everybody loved them, then one of the members was shot dead in a drive-by in 1997. Ironically, his rapper name was 'Danger'.
Lastly
Lil Rob, who is a San Diego rapper of Mexican descent. Apparently he has a big following in Japan, and is in a feud with fellow rapper
Mr. Shadow because Shadow slept with his girlfriend.
