When it comes to language use, I know what I like, but even more so I know what I dislike. I don’t like the word 'fashionista'. I don’t like the word 'groovy'. But by far the worst term is 'funky' – perhaps the most Baby Boomingly repugnant adjective to ever exist in the history of describing words. The only thing that should be described as 'funky' is a bad smell, or music from the funk genre.
By default, I feel like the word 'funky' is giving funk a bad name. Los Angeles Stones Throw artist Dam-Funk (pronounced 'dame'), however, is working on taking funky back to its true meaning. He’s a connoisseur of the early ‘80s stuff, as described on the Stones Throw website as "boogie, modern soul and electro-funk".
Look out for Dam-Funk’s forthcoming album Toeachizown and in the meantime, check out his crazy instrumental space funk on releases including R
hythm Trax Vol. 4 and the
Burgundy City 12”. If his sound had a smell it’s sure to be funky – but in a good way, like soul glo.
