Woah. However music critics want to describe
Buraka Som Sistema's take on Kuduro (and it's been described as everything from having a side of Kwaito, to grime, and Reggaetón) the only word to use for their show at Soco Cargo in Melbourne is HECTIC. Proper hectic.
There was too much seizure-dancing, whooping and sweating to keep track of. And the boy-crushes? Forget about it. Every man in there a little bit wanted to be MC Kalaf Ângelo whose dickie-bow, backpack, spectacles and swagger were the envy of everybody without ovaries in the venue. He was the perfect front-man; charming, energetic and managed to really connect with individuals in the audience.
The crowd was thrilled to hear riffs from Guns n' Roses and AC/DC mixed with some manic electro and DJs Lil' Joao and Riot's build-ups definitely brought on a few rave flashbacks. Closing with super excellent 'Kalemba', the crowd's only disappointment seemed that the show wasn't long or loud enough.
Worst: Cutting off drinks quite a while before the show was over.
Best: A tie between the audience singing along with M.I.A.'s chorus in
'Sound of Kuduro' and their looks of surprise/terror/delight when Snap's 'Rhythm
is a Dancer' began.
