Big Day Out, I like you. I really do. You've been good to me over the years, and though my interest wavers, that's natural with any long-term relationship. You need to nurture these things, be sensitive, yet encouraging. A bit spicy.
WOULD IT KILL YOU TO MIX IT UP ONCE IN A WHILE?!!
There's not too many surprises in the internet age. Sometimes, even less so with institutions. Thanks to various leaks, interviews and love letters, we already knew the likes of Muse, Lily Allen, Dizzee Rascal and Girl Talk were on their way to 2010 Big Day Out. Powderfinger, Eskimo Joe and Kisschasy we didn't need to. Whereas Grinspoon, Tame Impala and The Temper Trap will be at the opening of a tin can this festival season, as sure enough as the sun coming up tomorrow.
But it's the undercard at these festivals where the real value lies, and sure enough here we find a few fresh points of interest to unearth. (Which, one could argue, giant established festivals that sell out regardless of lineup are in prime position to do.) Epic US prog-metallaers Mastodon, epic US prog-folkies The Decemberists and the back-from-the-dead-now-kinda-interesting UK dudes The Horrors will all make a much anticipated journey to Australia.
