SLAM Rally, Melbourne

Thousands of live music loving Melbournians gathered in the city yesterday for the SLAM rally. The protesters were armed with instruments and placards and were joined by artists including Paul Kelly, Tim Rogers, Clare Bowditch, the members of Something for Kate, Mick Harvey, The Dirty Three, Wilbur Wilde, My Disco, Amanda Palmer and others. Despite it being described by some newsreaders as "a victory march", Melbourne's live music scene is not safe yet. Despite liquor licensing being decided 'case by case', the very same government officials – who have been making arguably poor decisions about live venues, ie: goodbye The Tote – are still the ones in power. Crossing fingers and making noise.

"High Risk"!? don't get me started. In melbourne right now there are plenty of people/groups aggressively dealing with melbourne's "alcohol issue" in a disorganised and hamfisted manner that punishes culturally significant venues and completely bypasses venues that profit from drug users and hide group violence issues from the authorities. There needs to a representative body made up of industry leaders who know the scene and can lend the blind and fumbling authorities insight. (breath, miro, breath)

Have you switched strains of hydroponic dope NJ or have I just woken up from a coma during which time the Liberals took office and put the policies in place that caused this?

I know Brumby is in the Labor party, but i diddnt see much of a presence from them holding dickweed signs looking exactly as they would at a gig, well out of place.

How often do you see the reason for the protest show up at the protest to support the protest?

It's called misplaced political opportunism. You're not the only one who'll think it looks dorky. It's like Kev on GNW during the week. Um...awkward....

I am so bummed I couldn't have been home for this. It looks beautiful - hopefully this bullshit with licensing laws gets sorted soon.
