Thousands of live music loving Melbournians gathered in the city yesterday for the SLAM rally. The protesters were armed with instruments and placards and were joined by artists including Paul Kelly, Tim Rogers, Clare Bowditch, the members of Something for Kate, Mick Harvey, The Dirty Three, Wilbur Wilde, My Disco, Amanda Palmer and others. Despite it being described by some newsreaders as "a victory march", Melbourne's live music scene is not safe yet. Despite liquor licensing being decided 'case by case', the very same government officials – who have been making arguably poor decisions about live venues, ie: goodbye The Tote – are still the ones in power. Crossing fingers and making noise.
