Beatnuts, DJ Premier and more live at the Espy - review and photos

The male to female ratio at The Espy on Saturday was heavily in favour of the fellas. Boys, boys, boys. Men on stage, blokes in the audience, and about 17 ladies. Hoodies and tattoos were the styles du jour for the show that featured the Beatnuts, DJ Premier, Masta Ace and Edo G. Premier (predictably and understandably) did a lot of Guru shout-outs, but effectively played a pretty lazy set compared with others Melbourne has seen from him in the past; lots of great track choices that were user-friendly crowd pleasers, but not a lot of showing off his skills. The Beatnuts were energetic and bouncing all over the stage, especially for 'No Escapin This' and their turbo-classic 'Watch Out Now'. The real highlight of the evening though, was Total Eclipse whose late set (which lasted just half an hour due to Premier playing overtime) was a sight to behold. The guy is way dextrous on the turntables.
