Last time we said hello to Australian label Vanguard, they were having a bit of an existential crisis of identity
. You could have said they were the Long Island Iced Tea of the fashion world: not sure whether their spirit lay with skate, grunge, surf, new wave, hip hop, rocker or just a totally dangerous concoction of all the above.
For spring-summer 2012, however, they've clearly sided with one spirit of choice: surfwear. This is a pretty digestible decision - comparable to vodka - that's easily mixed with most wardrobes, works its magic during both the day and night time, and goes well with those teeny tiny little umbrellas that are made out of toothpicks.
In true surf tradition, the men and women's label has also produced a series of pretty epic Hawaiian prints. It's the little details in this bespoke fabric illustration - a home grown spin on things using bottlebrush, wattle, gum leaves and kangaroo paw - which highlights how Vanguard is a rung or two up for your average surf brand.
They've also produced this cute little video for the collection which was shot in (where else?) Byron Bay, and features lots of appropriately cute models and dudes with long hair. Happy times. Pass the vodka, please.
