It’s kinda crazy to think that Stussy originated in Orange County; the brand’s been ubiquitous in the urban and street scenes since its inception thirty years ago, so it seems that NYC or even L.A. would be more fitting cities of origin. But then again, Stussy’s always been about the California surf/skate lifestyle that’s super prevalent in the OC, so that’s exactly where their 2011 Spring/Summer line’s taking them—back to their roots.
This time around though, Stussy decided to dig even deeper than their roots and fashioned a line that’s more in tune with the early ’70s Dogtown vibe than anything that spawned from a backyard vert ramp during the ’80s. The sunny California beach aesthetic is stronger than ever with Paisley button-ups, polka dotted and horizontally striped polos, as well as vintage baseball tees. Plus, seriously like ninety per cent of the kids modeling the look book have flowy sun-bleached blonde hair—you ain’t gettin’ that in the sprawling urban depths of NYC; that’s a Southern California trademark for sure.
So is Stussy’s latest look book successful? Well, I’ve already got my VHS copy of Dazed And Confused popped in the VCR, my cut-off shorts handy by my side, and nothin’ but the Beach Boys blaring, so I’d say yeah. Fuck work, time to throw on the Ray Bans and hit the beach, brah.
