This week would have been Lisa 'Left-Eye' Lopes' 41st birthday, and we thought a little attention needed to be paid. We could focus on the many musical achievements that the MC achieved with TLC in the '90s, but we thought this time we'd celebrate Left-Eye's status as a style icon.
While Lopes generally isn't remembered for her contribution to high fashion, you can't deny how much her ghetto/ anime/ pop/ drag aesthetic has influenced the style of modern stars like Azealia Banks and Nicki Minaj (go on, try and deny it). The thing about Left-Eye is that love or hate her style, she literally didn't look like anyone else in the pop/ Rn'B scene at the time– and not many artists can claim a completely original aesthetic.
Sure what she wore often was a bit eccentic, but that was part of her
appeal. Left-Eye wore whatever she want, and didn't care what anyone
else said. She was a gangster who constantly wore pink. She would wear black war
paint on her face, while she had fluffy scrunchies in her pigtails. She wore miniscule crop tops, while slapping an unopened condom packet on her eye like an eyepatch in her quest to promote safe sex (she also dyed the ends of her hair pink, waaay before Abby Lee started doing it).
She may not win over Anna Wintour, but fashion was meant to fun, right?
