Thomas Jeppe, The Height of Elegance

Thomas Jeppe, The Height of Elegance Thomas Jeppe's first Melbourne solo exhibition will consist a series of large-scale colour paintings on canvas supported by monochrome paintings on paper and a major sculptural work.

Model for a Time Machine presents an implausible invention, complete in its inactivity, not urging its own function, but content to remain in stasis. An amateur foray into the wonders of temporal disjunction; doomed to failure, but energised by the ignition of possibilities it presents.

Perpetual Motion: Right Wing Fantasy represents a Tigermoth biplane, a symbol of early 20th century aviation that continues to fly today as anachronistic nostalgia fodder. Here it sits disabled, it's left wings erased, casting an air of improbability, suspicion, on its remaining right wings - the foundations of a 'colourful past', invented as a military apparatus, that institutional control of the air in aid of enforcing political might... This fact countered by the parody of pastel blur, an unlikely camouflage.

Perpetual Motion 2 presents a sculpture of a timber propellor. Larger than life, and rendered useless by this fact, the lines that form the propellor have no corners, suggesting a large figure 8: infinity, perpetual motion, a line that does not stop.

Thomas Jeppe is the Founder of Serps Press, Associate Editor/Photography Editor of WON Magazine and Editor/Curator of the NowNow online gallery. Publications include Home Made Tattoos Rule (Serps Press, 2006) and The Changes: The Times They Are The Changes (essay text, Nieves/Pambook/MU, 2008). Exhibitions include Do You Remember What it Was?, Utopian Slumps, 2007, Everything Forever, Rear End Gallery, Melbourne and Palm Court Gallery, Perth, 2007 and Fabulous Mysteries, Keith & Lottie Gallery, Perth, 2006. Thomas will be holding his third solo exhibition at Black&Blue Gallery, Sydney in April 2009.
