Sarah Beetson isn't afraid of causing a bit of a ruckus. Her colourful artworks seem to have a kind of scribbled naivete but don't be fooled, these amazing candy coloured paintings are exploring some grown-up themes. Beetson is preoccupied with issues surrounding gender; "gender-bending, the subversion and manipulation of sexual roles and identities; drag queens, transsexuals and gay and lesbian subculture... personal identity, eating disorders and body image". Her characters are bolshy and bright, non-conformist and you might recognise a familiar face or two.
Beetson worked in the UK for clients like Pop, The Face and Stella McCartney before settling in Melbourne. Her show
Fifty Bucks, Bring on the Sluts toured three continents and the works have almost sold out but the remaining artworks will be on show tonight at
McCulloch Gallery (Rankins Lane, Melbourne). Saucy minx.
