If loving a painting of Kermit the Frog holding a gun is wrong, I don’t want to be right.
Californian artist Peter Adamyan creates huge painted wooden cut-outs of the worst and the best that American popular culture has to offer. A picture of Walt Disney’s smiling (and, as always, incredibly creepy) face is surrounded by his beloved Disney characters having some sort of mass orgy. Marilyn Monroe winces as her white dress flies up, while a South Vietnamese police chief points a gun to her head. Abraham Lincoln has both Ronald MacDonald, and the KFC Colonel sitting on his soldiers.
Although the 24-year-old’s painted juxtapositions of historical moments and people are often confronting, they are sometimes kind of hilarious. In particular his depiction of Barack Obama as a bad ass, gun-toting Blaxploitation hero and John McCain as a ‘roid riddled Rocky figure are very titillating. There are also many images of superheroes and genitalia. What more could you want?
