I pretty much blame Photoshop for the lame state of film poster design
over the last few years. Although occasionally a well considered gem
will stand out from the sea of ordinary, for the most part it seems
that the movie business doesn't value their poster art like they used
to. Over the last 30 years or so we've seen a gradual reduction in
illustrated film art and an increase in poorly composited digital
imagery. It's a shame.
A man who was at the forefront of cinematic art with a career that
spanned over 3 decades and who produced artwork for over 135 film campaigns
was American artist John Alvin. Sadly he passed away early last year
but his contribution to poster art and popular culture will be
remembered for eternity. If you don't know of him by name, you'll surely
recognise his work. He was the man responsible for the iconic imagery
used in campaigns for films such as Blade Runner, The Lost Boys, ET,
Gremlins and more...
