If you were to bastardise the English and Japanese language and translate it, Misaki Kawai's name would mean something like "my sake is cute". Which aptly describes her artwork.
Her paintings resemble what a toddler would paint while on hallucinogenics. Using childhood fantasies, she morphs daydreams into oils, letting us her inside her childlike subconscious. It is full of kissing seahorses, scuba diving lessons, camping trips and superhuman strength. However, it's not all sunshine, lollipops and
double rainbows though – there are also lion attacks, rogue man-eating octopuses, and a pigeon that eats red heads. Kind of like Inception, but with more rainbow sprinkles.
Her paintings are amusing on the top level, but then delve into further random details. Did anyone else notice the cat riding on the front of the bicycle about halfway through the above gallery? The bicycle called 'Satan'? No? Go looking for it.
