Dominican artist Gustavo Pena dabbles in painting, illustration and photography. Although 'dabbles' probably isn't the best word for it; he's really, really good at all three.
There's not a lot of information about Pena on the internets (his biography reads "Still in progress.") so it seems his artworks speak for themselves. His paintings are created in a pseudo-lowbrow style and depict grown men in Batman masks playing with ray-guns, kooky ladies swimming, self-portraits and kids in Darth Vader helmets. Some of his works seem inspired by Flemish portraiture – a darkly dressed, serious looking couple, painted carefully but almost blotchy (probably inaccurately conjured up similarities to
Cornelis Aerentsz van der Dussen).
Pena's influences must be drawn from all over, his style is a fabulous blend of eras and genres.
