Artist Dave MacDowell is a bit of a master. His paintings probably won't be hung next to Renoir's, but regardless of his oftentimes loopy subject choice, his skill is undeniable. The painter describes himself as a lowbrow artist and a pop surrealist and his artworks are busy, bright and marvellously absurd.

Often mashing up different films, bands, television shows, art and other bits and pieces of pop culture, MacDowell's paintings seem to have a Mad Magazine quality. Some of our favourites are the Clerks/Goonies/Stand By Me tribute 'Stand by Snootch' and his homage to artist Edward Hopper and John Hughes' The Breakfast Club called 'Breakfast Hawks'.

Apparently focusing on "childhood fantasy and contemporary cultural nightmare", MacDowell seems to have his tongue firmly in his cheek.
