Dane Lovett grew up in a time where mixtapes flourished, you had to remember to be kind and rewind, and everyone thought that CDs were akin to flying saucers. Oh, the glorious '80s/'90s swap over – when we all the hipsters were high, and the pants were even higher.
Lovett's watercolour paintings are drenched in nostalgia for a time where everything was more simple. He paints CDs, such as New Order's
Movement, propping up jarred pop plants, or stacks of VHSs that include recordings of Nirvana, Frank Zappa and Tupac. He also has an impressive collection of Roland synthesisers, plus a random portrait of
Rick Rubin. Right.
This is all coming from a man that claims his greatest achievement was winning a cake box decorating competition in 1991. Back then, he won a book on hippopotomuses. Now, he has some slighter better prizes, like an ARIA for designing the best Australian cover art in 2006. Well, I guess that depends on which you prefer: hippos or Australian music awards. I know which one I'd choose.
